Alastair Cook says England were outplayed in all areas of the game in the 405-run thrashing by Australia in the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

England were a shadow of the side that wrapped up victory within four days in Cardiff in the first of the five-match series.

Australia were the dominant team over all four days in London, and bowled England out for a miserly 103 in the second innings having set a target of 509 for victory.

Captain Cook was disappointed his side were unable to build on the Cardiff win, but gave credit to Australia for a fine performance.

"The standard we set ourselves at Cardiff, we've not backed it up here and it's incredibly frustrating," he said at the on-pitch presentation.

"Australia put us under pressure all game and were deserving winners. In Cardiff we did a lot of things very well and here we didn't do that at all.

"We didn't bowl well, didn't take catches and didn't score hundreds, so we failed in all three areas."

For the 11th time in 13 Test innings this year, England lost three wickets for less than 75 runs, but Cook is planning to take time to consider any potential changes to the order.

"Over the last few games we've been three down for 40-odd. It's hard for the middle order to get us out of trouble every time and it is area for concern.

"We have to take it on the chin, we have to show character to bounce back. You want to be tested against the best.

"I'm not really sure [about changes to the order] at this precise moment in time. The selectors might have to have a look, but it's down to the players. It's not about where people bat people have to get stuck in and we haven't managed to do that.

"But after a defeat like this you have to remember it's still 1-1."
