Australia vice-captain David Warner's return from injury has been confirmed after being named for New South Wales' Sheffield Shield clash against South Australia.

Warner has been sidelined since breaking his left thumb when he was struck by a short ball from Steven Finn during the one-day international series in England last month.

But, as he bids to prove his fitness ahead of the first Test against New Zealand, the left-handed opening batsman is set to feature for his state.

Warner was named in a strong NSW team for the four-day match in Adelaide starting Wednesday.

Steve Smith captains the side, which also includes Test players Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

Warner will be hoping a strong showing makes him a certain starter for the first Test, which begins against New Zealand in Brisbane on November 5.

NSW 12-man squad:

Ed Cowan, David Warner, Nic Maddinson, Steve Smith (c), Moises Henriques, Peter Nevill, Sean Abbott, Stephen O’Keefe, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Doug Bollinger.
