Australia vs India Test Match: Day 2 Review with Jess Jonassen image

India 5/276 (Mandhana 127, Molineux 2/28)

After another rain-affected day, India progressed to 5/276 with Smriti Mandhana scoring her maiden Test century after a stunning performance against Australia at Metricon Stadium.

Australia managed to make slight inroads, taking four wickets, and the green-and-gold will be keen to knock over the tail quickly during day three on Saturday.

Here are the major talking points from Day 2 with Sporting News' Melinda Farrell and Aussie star Jess Jonassen.

1. No ball problem costs Australia the wicket of Mandhana

With eventual century-maker Mandhana on 80, Australia thought they had the Indian batter's wicket when she was caught by Beth Mooney off the bowling of Ellyse Perry on the second ball of day two.

But the umpires signalled a no ball and Mandhana went on to make 127 before her wicket was eventually snared by Ashleigh Gardner.

"It's super frustrating at anytime [a wicket is chalked off] but [it's worse] when it's a Test match, particularly as Ellyse Perry had so far been wicketless for the whole series," Jonassen said.

"Perry thought she had finally made a breakthrough, obviously Mandhana not adding any runs to her overnight total, perfect start, but then obviously overstepped.

"I constantly have this debate with fast bowlers all the time, that they overstep by about a metre in the nets sometimes and you call it when you're batting and they get angry at you.

"If you bowl them here (in the nets) then you are going to bowl them in a game and supposedly they don't until they do."

2. Australia's spinners put to work

"The Aussie spin attack is what's kept Australia actually in this game a lot more," Jonassen said.

"They have dried up the runs, Ash Gardner got the breakthrough of Mandhana today and Sophie Molineux was back in the wickets again also.

"It was nice to see Georgia Wareham finally get a go, however she came into the attack late when the new ball was going to be taken.

"That was always going to go the way of the seamers and the weather has played havoc with the impact she could have potentially had."

3. Mandhana's maiden century

"When [the Aussie bowlers] did drop short, because (Mandhana) is good on the short ball, she was able to capitalise," Jonassen said.

"There is so much real estate out there on Metricon Stadium's open spaces that it's almost a free hit.

"The way that she celebrated her hundred, you could just tell that she wasn't finished yet, that she had more of a job to do, that she wanted to stay out there and make as many runs as possible for her country.

"I think she ended up becoming the highest Test match scorer by a female from a travelling party in Australia.

"She's done an exceptional job and put her team in a very strong position regardless of the significant amount of time we've lost out of this game."
