Gayle held the previous T20 record of 17 sixes in a single innings, a haul he plundered for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League 2013.
And the subcontinent was also the stage for the powerful West Indies batsman to go one better, as became the first player to notch more than 11,000 T20 runs, Rangpur posting 1-206 from their 20 overs.
After being blown away by Gayle's masterclass, Dhaka could only manage 9-149 in reply to see Rangpur lift the title for the first time.
