Chris Gayle will return to the Big Bash League in the Australian summer, after signing with the Melbourne Renegades.

West Indies opener Gayle, 35, formerly represented the Sydney Thunder, with his most recent BBL campaign seeing him struggle - as he made just 137 at an average of under 20, and a strike rate of 96.

But the Renegades, under new coach David Saker, have taken the plunge on the swashbuckling opening batsman.

Gayle has impressed in the ongoing Indian Premier League, making 387 runs at 43 in 10 innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"It's exciting to be coming to the Melbourne Renegades in the sporting capital of Australia," Gayle said in a statement.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the fans, getting to know the city a little more and helping the team into the finals in BBL 05.

"The club has put together a really solid list of players and with a new coach, we're looking at a big summer at Etihad Stadium."

Saker, a former bowling coach with England, said Gayle was not just hired for his batting, hinting the part-time off-spinner would be used prominently with ball in hand too.

"Chris' abilities and experience goes without saying. He has tremendous skills both as an explosive T20 batsman but also as that genuine all-rounder you need," Saker said.

"He's someone who can inspire the squad, particularly among our batsmen, with his confidence and his ability to back himself and flick the switch when the time is right."

Gayle bowled 13 overs for the Thunder in season 2012-13, for five wickets at an economy rate of under 6.5 runs.

In other domestic Twenty20 news, the Mumbai Indians have brought in former Renegades opener Alex Hales as cover for the injured Corey Anderson as they make their push for a finals series in the Indian Premier League.

The Indians sit in fourth but will likely need to win their final regular-season match against Sunrisers Hyderabad to qualify for the semi-finals.

Hales also filled a hole for the Renegades late in the 12-13 BBL season, making a blistering 89 off 52 in one of two appearances for the Melbourne franchise.
