Which teams will qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025?
The road to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is in full swing during the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup in India. The qualification process for this prestigious cricket tournament has taken an interesting turn, with implications that have surprised many cricket boards worldwide.
The qualification process is straightforward yet intriguing. The top seven teams at the conclusion of the group stage in the ICC ODI World Cup, along with the host nation, Pakistan, will secure their spots in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
This unique approach to qualification has injected unpredictability into the mix and at the same time taken the wind out of the sails of teams like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who struggled in the 2023 World Cup.
A Revival of the Champions Trophy
ICC unveiled its plans for a new cycle of global events in November 2021, spanning from 2024 to 2031. Among these events, two editions of the ICC Champions Trophy were announced, set to be held in 2025 and 2029.
The format for the 2025 and 2029 Champions Trophies will mirror that of previous editions. It will be an eight-team tournament with two groups of four teams each, followed by the knockout stages, including semi-finals and a final.
In the previous editions of the Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2017, the qualification criteria were based on the top eight teams in the One Day International (ODI) rankings at a specific cut-off date.
However, for the 2025 edition, a different approach was taken. According to ESPN Cricinfo, the decision to allow the top seven teams at the conclusion of the ICC ODI World Cup to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved by the ICC's chief executives committee in November 2021.
Additionally, it means full-member nations like West Indies and Zimbabwe are automatically out of the race as they failed to qualify for the 2023 World Cup.

What is the qualification pathway and format of the 2027 ICC World Cup?
The 2027 men's ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be a 14-team tournament co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will see the eight of the highest-ranked teams in the One Day International (ODI) rankings as of March 31, 2027, directly qualify for the tournament along with the two Full Member hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The remaining four teams will be determined through global qualifier tournaments. These tournaments will serve as a pathway for teams to earn their spots in the World Cup.
