Australia will field an experimental XI when they take on West Indies in the first one-day international at the MCG on Friday.

Nine players from Australia's winning World Cup 2023 squad won't be participating as Andrew McDonald looks to the future.

As consequence, several talented cricketers could make their debut for the national team in the 50-over format.

The Sporting News has all the latest team news ahead of the first ODI below.

Australia 1st ODI team news and predicted XI

Eight players missing from this Australian ODI squad that were at the World Cup include David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins, Mitch Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, Alex Carey and Marcus Stoinis.

Inclusions to the squad include potential debutants Jake Fraser-McGurk, Xavier Bartlett, Lance Morris and Will Sutherland, while Matt Short and Aaron Hardie are in the infancy of their ODI careers.

With David Warner's retirement, Matt Short will likely step up into the vacant opening slot alongside Travis Head, with familiar faces Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to come after.

Power batsman Fraser-McGurk could make his debut at no.5, with Cameron Green and Josh Inglis to complete the middle order.

All-rounder Xavier Bartlett is in line for a debut after an impressive BBL season for Brisbane Heat, with veterans Sean Abbott and Adam Zampa likely to be the front-line bowling attack alongside potential debutant Lance Morris.

Two debutants feature for the Windies ODI squad in top order batsmen Teddy Bishop and wicketkeeper-batsmen Tevin Imlach.

Powerful batsmen Justin Greaves also returns to the squad after being absent recently through a hamstring injury.

Other additions include Hayden Walsh Jr, who last played for the Windies in July 2022, and Kavem Hodge, who made his debut last year.

Players missing from the ODI squad that beat England in December, include Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford, but both are in the Windies T20 squad.
