The hosts resumed day four at 4-178 and never looked like making Australia bat again, slumping to defeat by an innings and 52 runs at Basin Reserve.
New Zealand were bowled out for 327 in their second innings as only debutant Henry Nicholls (59), Tim Southee (48) and Mark Craig (33 not out) provided any resistance.
Nathan Lyon (4-91), Mitchell Marsh (3-73) and Josh Hazlewood (2-75) did most of the damage as Australia's bowlers got some movement out of what appeared a flat wicket.
But their win was set up on day one when they won the toss and sent the Black Caps in before removing them for 183.
The dismissal of Brendon McCullum off the final ball of day three proved a huge blow for New Zealand.
Corey Anderson was the first to go on Monday, trapped plumb in front by Marsh for a 22-ball duck – and a review confirmed his dismissal.
BJ Watling (10) played a Lyon delivery onto his stumps before Jackson Bird (1-51) bowled Nicholls for his first wicket of the Test.
Doug Bracewell (14) was trapped in front by Hazlewood – and his review also failed – as Australia closed in on victory.
Southee blasted five fours and three sixes in his entertaining 23-ball innings, but the Test was over when Marsh bowled Trent Boult (12).
