UEFA Champions League results on Thursday morning
Real Madrid lost their first European match since May 2023, as a penalty in first half stoppage time led Lille to a 1-0 victory at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
After Lille hit the bar in the first period, Eduardo Camavinga's handball gave Jonathan David a chance from the spot to put the French side in front, and he made no mistake.
Carlo Ancelotti's side were far from their best, and even the introduction of Kylian Mbappe off the bench in the second half couldn't turn the tide, as some determined defending from the home side helped them hang on to a famous victory.
In Villa Park's return to hosting Champions League football, it was Jhon Duran's 79th minute goal that led to the other big upset of the day as Aston Villa defeated Bayern Munich 1-0.
It was a thrilling match with the woodwork becoming involved, disallowed goals and some great saves from Villa keeper Emi Martinez, but it was Duran the super sub with his sixth goal of the season that earned Villa a second straight win in the campaign in what was a rematch of the famous 1982 European Cup Final.
Elsewhere, 10-man Juventus pulled off a stirring comeback on the road against RB Leipzig, overcoming the dismissal of goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio to win 3-2 thanks to two goals from Dusan Vlahovic.
Dinamo Zagreb let a two goal lead slip at home against Monaco, whilst Liverpool overcame a stubborn test against Bologna to win 2-0, with alexis MacAllister and Mohamed Salah scorng the goals for Arne Slot's side.
