Lille vs. Real Madrid final score: UEFA Champions League result, stats as Jonathan David stuns Los Blancos image

Jonathan David held his nerve from the penalty spot to give Lille a famous 1-0 win over holders Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

The 15-time European champions were unbeaten in all competitions this season but ran into a well-drilled Bruno Genesio outfit at a raucous Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Kylian Mbappe was only fit enough for a place on the bench for Los Blancos, which meant a first start for Endrick. The Brazilian teenager almost grasped his opportunity in sensational style, producing an electric solo run before shooting too close to Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

Chevalier's opposite number Andriy Lunin did well to keep out David with a double save in the 25th minute but he had no answer in first-half stoppage time after a review of the pitchside monitor confirmed Eduardo Camavinga handled Edon Zhegrova's free-kick.

Aside from a petulant booking for Endrick, Madrid offered scant response early in the second period as the excellent Zhegrova curled a sumptuous effort just wide.

David also went close again, prompting Carlo Ancelotti to call on Mbappe despite the star forward's struggles with a thigh injury.

Madrid only truly threatened in the closing stages, when Chevalier's best work of a fine night between the posts saw him keep out Jude Bellingham, Antonio Rudiger and substitute Arda Guler in quick succession.

Mbappe could not produce a get-out-of-jail moment on his return to France. Madrid will have plenty of opportunities to atone for this setback, although a forthcoming run of games against last season's final foes Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Liverpool and Atalanta hardly looks straightforward.

The first two matchweeks have brought plenty of criticism for the new bloated competition format, where listless 90 minutes slogs have rubbed shoulders with risible mismatches. But the fulltime scenes in Lille were the sort of thing UEFA was maybe driving for with its revamp. This night will be talked about for decades to come in this proud, passionate corner of northern France.

Lille vs. Real Madrid live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

Diakite booked for that nonsense because I guess someone had to be. But Lille keep their heads, Modric's free-kick is cleared and that's it. The Stade Piere-Mauroy errupts! What a night for Lille and brilliant performance from Bruno Genesio's side. They were disciplined, worked their socks off and had moments of inspiration from the likes of Zhegrova, the brilliant teenager Bouaddi and match-winner David when it mattered. A night that will be talked about for years and decades to come in this corner of northern France. There was a late rally from Madrid, but Ancelotti will know his teams of moments men were wretched for about 80 minutes. Thanks for joining us!

90 mins+5: This might be it. Modric over a free-kick not long after a Dani Carvajal free-kick didn't really work. Oh, hang on... it's all kicked off in the Lille box.

90 mins: Chevalier gets in behind a Guler effort from Modric's floated ball. He's had a brilliant night, although the young Turk should have done better. There will be five minutes of stoppage time.

87 minsGood grief, how haven't Real Madrid scored? Valverde's bouncing shot from Vinicus' cross is headed goalwards by Bellingha,. It's cleared off the line by Santos and Chevalier saves superbly from the follow-up. Now more excellent work by the Lille goalkeeper as Rudiger makes a nuisance of himself and Vinicius can't finish.

85 mins: Vini Jr, another of the big dogs who's been quiet, picks out a fine ball for Bellingham at the back post. Gudmundson does brilliantly to clear behind and Lille see off the corner.

84 mins: Alexsandro is down in a heap after a robust tangle with Rudiger. The referee is not particularly interested.

80 mins: Ball over the top for Mbappe but Lille close the door. Understandably he doesn't look particularly sharp. Now Modric is into the book for clumping into Santos. Madrid look like they're coming apart at the seams here. Which means they're probably about to equalise.

78 mins: Bellingham has endured a frustrating evening and scythes into Sahraoui for a very obvious booking.

77 mins: Euurgghhh! Modric sprays a pass to no one in particular and out for a goal kick. Has he ever done that before? Emblematic of Madrid's night.

74 mins: Carvajal meets a set-piece with a clever glancing header towards the far post. We've seen this Champions League movie before. For the benefit of all the Borussia Dortmund fans out there having flashbacks, this one drops wide.

72 mins: Cabella makes a slow trudge off - a combination of time-wasting and being genuinely absolutely shattered. On comes Osame Sahraoui.

68 mins: Tchouameni was caught out on that recent David chance but he makes a vital interception here after more fine work from Zhegrova, who has been the best player on the pitch. Guler is on for Camavinga; Lille bos Genesio yet to turn to his bench.

65 mins" Madrid are committing men forward but David gives them a warning on the break. Lunin is relieved to see the Canadian's bouncing shot bobble wide.

57 mins: Endrick and Militao make way, with Mbappe and Modric on. That means Tchouameni will drop in at centre-back alongside Rudiger. Fran Garcia is also on in a straight swap for Ferland Mendy at left-back.

56 mins: Here comes Kylian...

53 mins: Zhegrova waves his wand of a left foot once more. A sumptuous curling effort goes just wide with Lunin at full stretch.

51 mins: Another Madrid attack breaks down and Lille will be very happy about the quiet start to this second period. We can't be far away from Mbappe now if he's at all fit.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

Off we go again. Within a minute of the restart, Endrick lands himself in the book on account of a reckless lunge on Alexsandro. Calm down, young man!

Halftime

Lille have produced a performance of supreme tactical discipline to limit Real Madrid to few sights of goal and they probably deserve the lead David gave them from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime. Mbappe remains on the bench for Los Blancos. How many minutes does he have in his legs?

45 mins+4: Almost an instant reply from Real Madrid. Chevalier looks to be in no-man's land but does enough to deny Endrick

45 mins+3GOAL!!!!! David sends Lunin the wrong way! Cool as you like, bedlam inside the Stade Pierre-Mauroy

45 mins+2: David having to re-spot the ball. How are your nerves?

45 mins: Maurizio Mariani heads to the screen.... PENALTY TO LILLE! Camavinga the man punished. David to take.

44 mins: Zhegrova's strike hits a fracturing Madrid wall. The Lille players appeal en masse for handball. There is a VAR check ongoing.

42 mins: Zhegrova drives Lille forward again and Rudiger brings down Cabella about 20 yards out. Free-kick to Lille in a shooting position. Zhegrova over it.

39 mins: Free-kick on the right for Lille. Zhegrova will curl this one in. Madrid get rid of it with the minimum of fuss on this occasion.

37 mins: Militao launches an attack now, sliding a fine pass to release Carvajal. The full-back looks for Bellingham but Santos gets there first.

35 mins: David chases a raking ball and Militao does very well to muscle the Canada start to the floor. Lunin gets to the ball before Bekker, who he sends flying. Bodies everywhere in the Madrid box but neither incident is a penalty.

33 mins: Andre mishits and cross that glances the top of the Madrid crossbar. It looks like he'd have been flagged for offside had that dropped in.

32 mins: Camavinga launches a ball over the Lille backline and Endrick's eyes light up. Chevalier reads the situation superbly, intercepts the ball on his chest and welts a volley clear. Not pretty but very effective.

29 mins: Carvajal's cross causes some minor chaos in the Lille box. Chevalier appears to be chastising his defender for not responding to his shout. The downside of a raucous home atmosphere. Anyhow, Genesio's men survive.

25 mins: Corner to Lille on the right, Rudiger up to get it away. Zhegrova has another go and David has found space at the far post... brilliant stop from Lunin. The Ukrainian arguably shouldn't have had a chance but he did very well to keep the header out before responding sharply to keep out David's follow-up.

19 minsBrilliant solo run from Endrick. Lille turnover possession in their own half and Vinicius cleverly opens up room for his younger compatriot. Endrick shows electric pace and flawless close control to condemn Lille defenders to his slipstream before shooting at Chevalier.

18 mins: Another Lille attack featuring a couple more Santos deliveries, the first again towards David before the latter curls kindly into Lunin's gloves.

17 mins: Lille have played tidily here and have a clearly drilled plan. Santos charges forward from right wing-back to launch first-time cross towards David, who controls on his chest but can't bring the ball under his spell.

16 mins: Bellingham, still looking for his first goal of the season, takes aim for the top corner from the edge of the box and shoots over. Alexsandro hurled himself bravely into the line of fire there.

11 mins: Carvajal slots a teasing ball towards the Lille box. Diakite reads Endrick's run but trips over the youngster and collides with goalkeeper Chevalier. A painful-looking one of the centre-back but he seems ready to continue.

6 mins: Vinicius cuts inside and fires goalwards. Chevalier gets down well and holds onto the ball despite the greasy surface.

5 mins: A poor clearance from Alexsandro falls straight to Camavinga but Madrid elect to calmly keep possession an build rather than going for the throat. Quietening this effervescent crowd in the name of the game; offering David et al the chance to break at speed is not.

Kickoff: 1st Half

We're underway, amid a fog of firework smoke.

3 mins before kickoff: Here are the players. The home fans roar at the crescendo of the competition anthem. The locals are bang up for this.

20 mins before kickoff: By contrast, Lille's 3-0 win at La Havre on Saturday was their first victory in five outings, the preceding 3-3 draw against Strasbourg having snapped a run of four-straight defeats that ended with their 2-0 defeat at Sporting CP. Any result to get Bruno Genesio's men on the board tonight would be raucously celebrated.

40 mins before kickoff: After a slightly stuttering start to the season in LaLiga, Madrid have trimmed Barcelona's lead at the summit to three points and their weekend draw across town at Atletico Madrid ended a five-game winning run across all competitions, including their opening 3-1 Champions League triumph over Stuttgart. Ancelotti's men appear to be warming to their task nicely despite an at times notable injury list.

1 hour before kickoff: The Lille team is more or less as you'd expect, with the bulk of the attacking burden falling on Jonathan David. The Canada forward was recently linked to Barcelona so has an obviously opportunity to land himself on the front pages of Sport and Mundo Deportivo on Thursday morning.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: The Real Madrid team is in early, as is Ancelotti's wont. Kylian Mbappe is only on the bench as he builds his way back to full fitness. His brother Ethan is out of this one for Lille too. The harsh realities of a packed European calendar care not for your narratives. Endrick makes his first start in attack for Madrid. The Brazilian teenager has two goals across eight substitute appearances so far, which total 50 minutes on the field.

2 hours before kickoff. Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of Lille versus Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. Kylian Mbappe can expect a white-hot atmosphere at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on his return to France.

Lille vs. Real Madrid lineups, team news

The big news for Lille is that Ethan Mbappe, brother of Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe, has failed to recover from a thigh injury and will miss out on facing his sibling.

The goal-scoring burden will again fall on Canada star Jonathan David, who has this week been linked with Barcelona and may relish the chance to do damage against their La Liga rivals.

England midfielder Angel Gomes is suspended after his red card against Sporting CP, so the experienced Remy Cabella comes into a packed midfield

Lille predicted XI (5-4-1, right to left): Chevalier (GK) — Santos, Diakite, Alexsandro, Gudmundson, Bakker — Zhegrova, Andre, Cabella, Bouaddi— David

Kylian Mbappe is in the matchday squad for this game but Carlo Ancelotti has decided to start him on the bench to avoid rushing him back from injury. That could see Jude Bellingham deployed in more of the false 9 role he played last season, while Endrick makes a keenly anticipated maiden Madrid start.

Andriy Lunin starts in goal after Thibaut Courtois suffered an abductor injury. Aurelien Tchouameni keeps his place in midfield despite a shaky performance in the 1-1 draw with rivals Atletico Madrid last weekend.

Real Madrid (4-3-3, right to left): Lunin (GK) — Carvajal, Rudiger, Militao, Mendy — Valverde, Tchouameni, Camavinga — Endrick, Bellingham, Vinicius
