Junior welterweight Maxim Dadashev will be undergoing surgery at the University of Maryland's Prince George Hospital Center to reduce the swelling in his brain after his 11th round TKO loss to Subriel Matias at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md. The fight took place on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez vs. Matsuyoshi Nakatani on ESPN+.

After a close fight in the early going, Matias started to take control in the middle half by attacking Dadashev's body with one hard body shot after another. In the 10th round, Matias started mixing it up by going to the body and then going upstairs with vicious left uppercuts. In the 11th round, all those hard shots from the previous round started to their took a toll on Dadashev as Matias teed off on until the round came to a close. The effects of those punches were clear as Dadashev visibly had difficulty making it back to his corner.

Before the 12th round began, Dadashev’s head trainer Buddy McGirt warned that he was going to stop the fight because of punishment doled out by Matias. Dadashev had a blank stare and didn’t utter a word to him. McGirt took matters into his own hands and told the referee his guy wouldn’t be continuing.

Dadashev had a hard time exiting the ring and needed numerous people to assist him down the steps. He was still in bad shape and nearly collapsed on the floor before being put onto a gurney and wheeled to an ambulance. On the broadcast, ESPN reported that Dadashev was severely dehydrated and suffered a severe concussion that left the fighter vomiting violently. While in the ambulance to the hospital, Dadashev lost consciousness and was being sent to Prince George, which is a trauma center, to have a CT scan. Upon arrival, it was determined that the 25-year-old needed to have the surgery.

Doctors were trying to get contact Dadashev's wife, who lives in Russia to get a list of allergies before placing him into surgery.

Our thoughts and prayers at Sporting News are with Dadashev and his family. We hope for a full recovery.
