Featherweights will be in action when Luis Alberto Lopez defends the IBF title against Joe Gonzalez at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on September 15. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast on ESPN+ in the U.S.
Born in Mexico, Lopez turned pro in 2015. "El Venado" was crowned the IBF champion when he upset Josh Warrington in 2022 via majority decision. In his last fight, in May, Lopez beat Michael Conlan via TKO to retain the belt. The 30-year-old has 16 wins via knockout.
If he beats Gonzalez, Lopez may look for fights against rival champions in his division, including Leigh Wood, Robeisy Ramirez, and Rey Vargas. He could also look into fighting unified super bantamweight champ Naoya Inoue.

This will be Gonzalez's third attempt at featherweight gold. Turning pro in 2012, the 29-year-old lost against Shakur Stevenson in 2019 for the WBO title. He then fought for the exact same belt again, losing to Emanuel Navarrete in 2021. Gonzalez has since gone 2-1 in his last three fights and won his last bout against Enrique Vivas in April.
