Australian boxer-puncher Jai Opetaia has ventured 17,000 miles for an IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight title defence against Jordan Thompson at the OVO Arena Wembley in London.

The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast by DAZN on September 30, except in Australia where fight fans can watch on Fox Sports and Kayo.

Despite fighting outside of his home country for the first time, Opetaia is a significant favourite to retain his championships. Unbeaten, with 17 of his 22 wins coming by knockout, the 28-year-old is coming off a world title win over three-time world ruler Mairis Briedis. Meanwhile, Thompson has never mixed in this kind of company.

Outside of the main event, there will be more championship action on the card and a host of other fighters looking to reach the summit in their respective divisions:

Ellie Scotney vs. Laura Soledad Griffa

London’s Scotney (7-0) makes the maiden defence of the IBF super bantamweight championship she won from Cherneka Johnson in June. The home fighter takes on Argentina’s Griffa (20-8, 1 KOs), who unsuccessfully challenged for this very title in 2018 when she was outpointed by Marcela Acuna.

Cheavon Clarke vs. Vasil Ducar

The hard-hitting Clarke looks to extend his unbeaten 6-0 record and continue his ascent up the cruiserweight ranks. Ducar (14-6-2, 10 KOs) may represent Clarke's biggest test to date and he has mixed in good company, pushing both Chris Billam-Smith and Jordan Thompson the distance in losing efforts.

Rhiannon Dixon vs. Katharina Thanderz

Dixon (8-0, 1 KO) is coming off a career-best win over the previously unbeaten Vicky Wilkinson that saw her lift a Commonwealth title. She will now challenge for the vacant European championship against Norway’s Thanderz (16-1, 2 KOs), who is looking to regain that title.

If you were to place a flutter on four of the Brits appearing on the card, then you can get some attractive odds at SkyBet:

Example:

  • Jordan Thompson by decision: 7/1 or +700
  • Ellie Scotney by decision: 1/4 or -400
  • Cheavon Clarke by KO: 4/9 or -225
  • Rhiannon Dixon by KO: 4/1 or +400

Four-way odds: 77.22/1 or +7722

The Thompson pick is a major risk here, but if the London-based challenger can make his height (6-6) and home advantage work for him, then stranger things have happened. Also, Opetaia, largely through no fault of his own, has been woefully inactive in recent years.
