Jaime Munguia is determined to have a busy year, which includes a fight against Canelo Alvarez. He faces former Canelo opponent John Ryder in Phoenix on January 27.

Munguia turned pro in 2013. He won super welterweight gold when he beat Sadam Ali in 2018 for the WBO belt. In what is considered his biggest win to date, Munguia beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June. The 27-year-old has won 33 fights via knockout and is undefeated at 42-0. He believes beating Ryder will finally secure him a title shot at super middleweight.

"2024 is my year," Munguia told Boxing Scene. "Honestly, I am not taking Ryder lightly. Ryder has all of my respect. Yes, I see a difficult fight. At this level, every fight is difficult. The guy went the distance with Canelo Alvarez and beat Daniel Jacobs. Of course, it's a difficult fight. But I believe in my training. I believe we can get it done and beat this guy… I can assure it's going to be a great fight."

Ryder turned pro in 2010 and is a multi-time title contender. Callum Smith beat him to retain the WBA and The Ring belts. "The Gorilla" rebounded with wins over Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker. In his last fight in May, he lost against Canelo Alvarez for the status of undisputed super middleweight champion. The 35-year-old has 18 wins via knockout but doesn’t want to force a win via the power punch. He also wants to make sure the fight is without controversy.

"That's all we can ask for [a fair shot with the judges]," Ryder said via Boxing Scene. "I think we saw it in the Munguia-Derevyanchenko fight. It came down to the last round. I think the judging and scorecards were spot on. I don't want to go in there having to depend on a knockout because it's going to cloud my judgment, cloud the way I fight, and make everything harder and a bit. I want to go in there relaxed and put on a show and be judged fairly."
