Looking to finally beat Canelo Alvarez on September 17, Gennadiy Golovkin is hoping to silence the doubters — and Canelo, himself.

At an introductory press conference, Canelo called Golovkin two-faced multiple times. Golovkin, the IBF, WBA (Super), and IBO middleweight champion, was candid with George Ebro of El Nuevo Herald about Canelo’s attitude when they faced one another for the first time since 2018.

“When someone is unable to see reality, that is his problem, it says a lot about him. His behavior at the press conference shows how insecure he is, how he still lives in illusions about the situation, the stories,” Golovkin told Ebro, translated via Boxing Scene. "He drew his own conclusions based on the first press conference.

"His behavior was different in the second. He analyzed that he looked ridiculous [in the first one]. For a fighter of this caliber, someone who wants to be great, shows that he still needs to grow, he needs to learn a lot. He is far from being the best."

Canelo and Golovkin first fought in 2017, with the bout ending in a controversial split decision draw. They competed in a rematch in 2018, which was delayed by a few months after Alvarez tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol. Canelo won via majority decision. This fight will be for Canelo's undisputed super-middleweight titles.

Since the second fight, Golovkin has won four in a row. He won the IBF and IBO middleweight titles against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in 2019. After two years away from the ring, Golovkin fought Ryota Murata in April. Golovkin won via TKO in the ninth round to win the WBA (Super) middleweight title.

After losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2013, Canelo has gone 15-1-1. Canelo unified the super-middleweight division in just 11 months following the Golovkin fights. His last win was over IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant in November 2021.

In May, Canelo competed for a light-heavyweight title for just the second time in his career, and he lost to Dmitry Bivol via unanimous decision.

Canelo signed a record $365 million deal with DAZN back in 2018. In 2020, Canelo filed a lawsuit against DAZN and Golden Boy and accused both of a breach of contract. He requested damages of up to $280 million following disagreements of potential opponents and payments. It was believed by DAZN (per ESPN) that a third Golovkin fight was on the table early on in the deal, which didn't happen. Canelo was granted his release from his deal not long after.

After competing on a variety of platforms recently, Canelo returned to DAZN to face Dmitry Bivol for light-heavyweight gold. It was a rare PPV format on DAZN, the same as Canelo-Golovkin 3 will be. Golovkin signed a six-fight deal with DAZN in 2019.
