West Coast's Willie Rioli is "a mess" following his provisional ASADA suspension, according to Eagles footy manager Craig Vozzo.

The 24-year-old was banned indefinitely pending an investigation after an August 20 sample he returned suggested he had substituted his urine.

Vozzo spoke to the media on Thursday after Rioli's suspension was announced, saying the small forward wouldn't have been capable of playing in his current emotional state.

"He's very, very flat," Vozzo said.

"The club and the staff are really worried about his wellbeing, he's not in a great space and it's our job to help him as much as we can.

"At the moment, he's a little bit of a mess to be honest. We've had some productive discussions with him but they'll be ongoing."

According to AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon, Rioli is alleged to have "returned an adverse analytical finding for urine substitution."

Speaking on AFL Tonight on Thursday, former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna questioned how a player could possibly substitute their sample.

"If (ASADA) come to training on a Tuesday - which was the date in question - once you get a tap on the shoulder... they then follow you around the football club everywhere you go," Montagna said.

"When it's time that you think you can produce a sample and then go to the toilet, you have to stand in front of this ASADA person, with your pants down at your ankles and your top up to your chest and you're standing there completely nude.

"I find it incredibly hard to believe that you could actually deceive ASADA, first of all in going to your locker or your bag and getting something and then actually being able to carry it out.

"If it is that he has deceived them, then you've almost got to question the protocols that ASADA would have gone through.

"I've been tested that many times and to get away with anything is nigh on impossible."

Rioli was originally named to face Geelong in Friday night's MCG semi final, though he has now been replaced by Jack Petruccelle.
