West Coast Eagles reveal secrets behind dramatic grand final win image

Almost two weeks removed from their dramatic five-point grand final win over Collingwood, some of West Coast's premiership stars have opened up on the match-winning play.

As fans saw it, Jeremy McGovern left Jordan De Goey and took a big intercept mark before arrowing a kick to Nathan Vardy who sent it down the wing where Liam Ryan hung on to a crucial grab.

Ryan hit Dom Sheed in the pocket who threaded the needle to give the Eagles the match-winning lead.

But, speaking on West Coast's BACKchat podcast, defender Will Schofield says it was his bold attempt at becoming the hero that laid the platform for the crucial passage of play.

In the moments before that series, West Coast were bringing the ball out from defence and Schofield's eyes lit up.

"This hasn't been touched on in the public..." Schofield told former teammate Sam Butler.

"I hadn't left the back 50 for the whole game, and I was like 'you know what, I'm going to be a hero'.

"I have started sprinting down the middle of the ground, no one around me.

"The ball gets kicked to a two-on-two, Jack Darling and Flyin' Ryan versus (Jack) Crisp, maybe (Brayden) Maynard.

"I was 30-40m in front of any Collingwood player, and Willie (Rioli) and his opponent were inside 50.

"If we had have won that, I would've been kicked the ball in the middle of the ground, and either Willie's opponent would have pressed me and I would've kicked it over the top, or I would've had to run and have a shot for goal."

As it turned out, the Eagles lost the ball on the wing and Schofield was a long way from his direct opponent.

"I've looked up and gone 'oh no, De Goey is in the goal square by himself'," Schofield said.

"Gov, because he's so bloody lazy and doesn't press, he hadn't moved.

"He's standing in the goal square, ended up on De Goey, and you know what happened."

So there you have it, Will Schofield is the real grand final hero.

It's also been revealed that, on top of being hospitalised with internal bleeding in the week leading up to the decider, McGovern had suffered broken ribs during the match.

"I copped another couple of hits in the back and cracked my other ribs," the defender told Channel Nine.

"I don't know what time of the game it was, but I've ended up cracking those, so that was great.

"You've got to love your footy."
