Collingwood have won out in the race to sign former Australian basketballer Tom Wilson.

Wilson, 21, joins the Pies on a three-year deal as a category B rookie - meaning he is free to play straight away.

The Pies had been tracking the talented junior footballer for more than a year and beat off competition from the likes of Geelong and Hawthorn.

The 194cm Wilson played for Victoria at U16 level before pursuing a career in basketball.

Last playing for Sydney Kings in the NBL, Wilson earned two caps for the national team earlier this year, though looked a long shot for Olympic selection in 2020.

Wilson's desire to stay in his native Melbourne, and several meetings with Pies coach Nathan Buckley, are believed to have swayed his decision to sign with the club.

Collingwood have had recent success with basketball converts - American Mason Cox has proven to be an important part of their forward line, while captain Scott Pendlebury has a well-publicised junior history in the sport.

Wilson would most likely play as a tall midfielder, though judging by the length of his deal, the Pies will give him plenty of time to rehone his skills.
