GWS star Toby Greene has surprisingly extended his contract at the Giants, with the deal keeping him at the club until the age of 33.

In 2018, Greene signed a six-year deal that expired at the end of the 2024 season, but has decided to add a further two years to that current contract in a show of faith for GWS' direction.

The 27-year-old has assumed the captaincy at the Giants this season after the injury to skipper Stephen Coniglio and has excelled with his on-field performance, kicking 19 goals and averaging 18 disposals in seven games.

Greene revealed his delight at re-signing with GWS - a club he joined as a teenager when he was selected at no.11 in the 2011 AFL draft.

"I’ve always known my future was at the Giants, it’s been my home since I was 18," he said.

"We’ve got a young and exciting group this season and I’m privileged to lead them out until Cogs (Stephen Coniglio) returns.

"It’s been a really enjoyable start to the season and I’m looking forward to being back in Sydney in front of our orange army this weekend."

Giants football manager Jason McCartney was pleased to have locked in Greene for the rest of his career.

The former North Melbourne star also pointedly spoke about the development of Greene as a leader in 2021.

"Toby’s obviously a star of the competition and is having a brilliant start to the season," McCartney said.

"He’s flourished with the added responsibility this season which is really pleasing.

"It was a pretty easy option for us to add another couple of years to his contract, we’ve always known he’ll be a Giant for life."

After losing their first three games of the season to St Kilda, Fremantle and Melbourne, the Giants have recovered to win three of their next four matches versus Collingwood, Sydney and Adelaide.

GWS will host Essendon at Giants Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
