Sydney warn supporters against abusive comments after loss image

Sydney have warned supporters against posting abusive or personal attacks on their Facebook page after their thrilling one point loss on Saturday night.

The Swans went back and forth with Fremantle in Perth, before finally faltering by one point in an incredible game.

However, the club posted a statement on their Facebook, outlining that while they understood the disappointment of the loss, any comments which were abusive would not be tolerated.

“Passion and investment in a team brings a lot of emotion which we completely appreciate and it’s something we love about footy. A loss is frustrating, we get it,” the statement read.

“However just a reminder that these guys are human. Personal attacks / abusive comments and messages on our players and coaching staff via social media will not be tolerated.

“We are the youngest AFL team this round, 17 under 100 game and x7 20 years old or younger.

“Get behind the boys & stay #ProudlySydney.”

Poor fan behaviour has been a hot topic this season, with supporters having been banned from games for abusing umpires and racist taunts to opposition players.

Earlier in the year, AFLW star Tayla Harris was subject to a series of abusive comments after a photo was snapped of her kicking for goal in a game in March.

Later, Hawthorn champion Jarryd Roughead had comments made about his fight against cancer on Facebook after the Hawks’ five point win over Carlton.

A Richmond member was suspended in March after he made racist comments on social media about West Coast Eagles’ speedster Liam Ryan.

Players have begun to out online abuse, with some commenting on how it has affected their mental health.

Young Melbourne forward Sam Weideman had deleted his social media accounts following online attacks earlier this year, while Collingwood’s Dayne Beams posted a screenshot of an abusive message on his Instagram story.
