Round 20, 2018.

It just keeps getting better.

Sydney claimed a two-point win over Collingwood to make it five games decided by less than a goal for the round for the first time in VFL/AFL history.

In a thrilling Saturday night encounter at the SCG, it took a clever goal from Tom McCartin to give the home side the victory and keep their finals hopes alive.

The game was marked by momentum shifts throughout but Sydney looked to have done enough when they got out to three-goal lead early in the final term.

Collingwood had other ideas and steamed home, their rampant pressure helping them to the lead late in the final quarter.

McCartin, the youngest player in the competition, kicked the winner when he scooped up a loose ball and threw it on to his boot as he was being tackled.

The ball dribbled through over the line just ahead of the outstretched hand of Tom Phillips.

Sydney found themselves in that position largely thanks to superstar forward Lance Franklin's six-goal haul.

It could have been more for Buddy who hit the post three times among his 10 shots at goal.

An early injury to Magpies tall Darcy Moore meant first-gamer Jack Madgen had the task of looking after Franklin for much of the game, a matchup that the Swan took full advantage of.

For the Pies, star ruckman Brodie Grundy was dominant in the ruck, while Travis Varcoe helped himself to four goals up forward.

The result sees Sydney move up to sixth position, though GWS and Melbourne could jump them on Sunday.

Collingwood remain in the top four on percentage, though if the Giants get past Carlton they will drop to fifth.
