Melbourne recruit Steven May faces a nervous wait on the Match Review Officer's verdict on his late hit on Brisbane Lion Jarrod Berry.

Berry had handballed clear when May's bruising shoulder collected him high, flattening him to the ground.

Members of the crowd called the former Sun a ''dog'' as Brisbane players rushed to defend their teammate.

Berry was able to scurry back to his feet and continued on in the game.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin doesn't believe his recruit has a case to answer in what was an otherwise impressive pre-season hit-out.

“I had a bit of a look at that. (It) seemed minimal contact to me; he was just standing there ready to block,” Goodwin said.

“So I’m really confident he’ll be right to play. I thought he worked his way into the game today. Obviously he was a bit slow early, but I felt he built some momentum as the game went on.”

May has a chequered history in the judicial system, found guilty of offences on eight occasions for a total of 10 matches in suspensions.

Melbourne faced their second consecutive JLT Community Series defeat, losing to Brisbane 104-96 at Casey Fields.
