Terry Wallace: Stephen Coniglio and Tim Kelly deals could affect each other image

Midfielders Stephen Coniglio and Tim Kelly might determine each other's fates regarding where they line up for season 2020.

GWS star Coniglio is out of contract at the end of the year, with Geelong, West Coast, Carlton and Hawthorn interested in the onballer, if he decides to leave the Giants.

Speaking on SEN, AFL Hall of Fame member Terry Wallace said he believes that if Kelly heads to West Coast, Coniglio should replace him at the Cats, but if Kelly stays at Geelong, Coniglio should head west to the Eagles.

He also explained why he believes the Hawks should be the next option for Coniglio.

“I’d have Hawthorn next,” Wallace said.

“Why? The club. Not the position, not necessarily the list, not necessarily anything else.

"But we know what they’re building, we know what they’re about to build, we know what they’ve been able to do in years gone past.”

The comments come after it was reported that Carlton are set to make a last-ditch bid for the Giant.

The deal is reportedly set to be more than five years, worth more than $1.4 million a year.

Wallace's comments about Hawthorn are at odds with GWS CEO Dave Matthews, who said Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett's comments earlier this week would have put the midfielder off the club.

Kennett earlier this week questioned whether security staff were unable to control AFL crowds due to their ethnicity.

Speaking to SEN, Matthews said the comments were disappointing.

"At the Giants we are very focused on diversity and inclusion and Jeff Kennett’s comments serve to undermine the efforts of a lot of people within the game and at community level,” Matthews said.

“Well knowing Stephen’s character very well and knowing he’s a multicultural ambassador, I think the way those values were expressed were a long way from where he sits as an individual.”

Matthews also said there was no pressure on Coniglio to have made a decision yet.

“We have a great level of respect for him, we’ve been really content with his focus on playing very good football and leading this club the way he does,” Matthews said.

“It’s a good time for everyone to take a deep breath, I’m sure that’s what Stephen’s doing and when he gets to a point where he wants to make a decision, he’ll do that.”
