St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt won't be joining the club's football department any time soon, according to the man himself.

The former skipper and six-time best and fairest was rumoured to have been sounded out for an assistant coaching role, along with fellow club favourite Leigh Montagna.

Both Riewoldt and Montagna have roles on Fox Footy which would be a significant obstacle.

Speaking on AFL360 on Wednesday night, Riewoldt said he had been approached but wasn't in a position to take up a coaching role.

"I've had some conversations about what that might look like and my role presently in the media and the challenge that might exist there," Riewoldt said.

"It's not something that I would jump into without having a really deep understanding as to what it involved.

"I don't have any desires at this stage to coach or do anything within the football department."

St Kilda find themselves in 15th position with just four wins in 2018, a significant drop off from their 11-win 2017 season.

Riewoldt lamented the club's current circumstances, saying patience could be running out with the rebuild.

"It is a dire situation at St Kilda at the moment," Riewoldt said.

"I really feel for the club and the members of the football club. It's a really transparent rebuild which hasn't gone to plan.

"The club and the administration asked for a lot of patience from the supporters but you just feel now that's starting to wear really thin."

Questions around Alan Richardson's coaching have hung around all season, though footy manager Simon Lethlean recently threw his support my the embattled mentor.

Riewoldt said that ought to be taken at face value but the club would be well aware of the heat directed their way.

"The results so far this year would suggest that he's under pressure and I think that he understands that and I think the football club are aware of that," Riewoldt said.

"That's what the review really has been about and whether the landscape will change based on what happens over the next two weeks, only the club can answer that, but up until this point SImon Lethlean has been pretty resolute that Richo is the right man and he's going to be safe and until we hear otherwise we have to assume that's the case."
