St Kilda could have a new coach 'come Monday', says Mitch Cleary image

Saints coach Alan Richardson could be out of a job by Monday.

That's what journalist Mitch Cleary thinks, believing that if St Kilda suffer a heavy loss to Geelong on Saturday night, the Saints may move Richardson on.

Speaking on SEN, Cleary said Richardson's reign at St Kilda might be over as early as the start of next week.

“It might even be Sunday should it not go to plan for them down in Geelong tomorrow night,” Cleary said.

“Alan Richardson needs a solid performance (from the Saints), otherwise things could get ugly on Sunday.

“I think as much as the industry is talking about Alan Richardson’s short tenure that remains at the Saints, he’s well aware of it as well.

“He won’t be there next year and I think it’s now just a matter of time when the Saints pull the trigger on their senior coach.

“If we are looking at a 10-goal plus loss against the Cats on Saturday night, they might have a new coach come Monday.”

While the pressure is well and truly on Richardson, his chances of staying in charge of the Saints might be boosted towards the end of the year.

Speaking to reporters at RSEA Park today, Richardson says he is hopeful that onballer Jack Steven will play again in 2019.

"His training the past few weeks is the training of a fella that's loving his footy again, really enjoying being around his teammates and really enjoying being at the footy club," Richardson said.

"I've become optimistic that we are a chance to see Jack. Hopefully it's soon. It might not be, but we'll just have to wait and see."

Recently, Saints football boss Simon Lethlean offered a frank assessment of Richardson's future at the Saints - one that given their recent form, doesn't bode well for his chances of coaching them in 2020.

"We've got to start beating some teams above us, rather than teams just below us," Lethlean said.

"We need to perform a lot better than we did last night to prove to all of us that we're heading the right way.

"Alan's our coach and if we keep improving, Alan will still be our coach.

"Certainly, a lack of improvement or a regression in how the team and players are responding ends up being a deciding factor."
