Veteran sports broadcaster Sandy Roberts has announced his retirement from television after a near 50-year career on Aussie screens.

Roberts, 68, would be most familiar to footy fans, having worked on Channel 7 before later switching to Fox Footy.

The South Australian has called 19 grand finals in his time, as well as eight summer and three winter Olympic games among countless other sporting events.

Roberts said he will continue to work on radio but the time has come to end his television career.

"I want to thank the viewers for welcoming me into their lounge rooms for almost five decades," said Roberts."

It’s an absolute honour to call live sport on TV for a living and to share that excitement with fans.

"It has been an honour and now it’s time to hand over the commentary box to the young guns."

Roberts called an incredible 1,100 VFL/AFL games in his time but few will be better remembered than his call during a 1993 match at the SCG when a pitch invader became the centre of attention.

"There's a pig on the ground," Roberts informed viewers.

"There is a pig at full forward."
