Melbourne's season from hell continues to get worse, with Sam Weideman and Kade Koladjashnij being ruled out for the season.

Weideman has played 11 games this season, battling injuries, including hip complaint, as well as form issues.

After recently returning from a calf injury, Weideman was ruled out for the rest of the year after breaking his jaw in the VFL over the weekend.

Returning from injury, the 22-year-old Weideman collided with teammate Dean Keilty in the opening minute.

He was left with a concussion, and had surgery Monday to repair two breaks in his jaw.

“Unfortunately, he’s done for the year – he had surgery on his jaw last night,” Elite Performance Manager David Misson told the club website.

“It was broken in two spots, so it was reasonably significant, but it shouldn’t interrupt the start to his pre-season too much.”

Koladjashnij has had a horrible run with concussion over his career, and has only managed two AFL games this year.

The 23-year-old was last seen on the field during June of this year, where he suffered another concussion in the VFL.

"Obviously he's had multiple concussions, so we're being cautious with him," Misson said.

"He's just come back from the Gold Coast after having a bit of time away with his family to just reset, but he's come back pretty enthusiastic to get going again.

"He won't play this year, but we're hoping we'll set him up for a good pre-season."

Steven May is "touch-and-go" to return this week to face Richmond, but will need to get through a fitness test this week to be okay to play.

The Dees have had a shocking run of injuries throughout the year, with names such as Jeff Garlett (shoulder), Kolodjashnij, Tom McDonald (meniscus), Aaron Nietschke (ACL), Joel Smith (groin), Weideman and Guy Walker (shoulder) all out for the season.

They currently sit 17th on the ladder, after a season of promise in 2018 in which they reached the Preliminary Final.
