This is the last things the Pies needed.

In perhaps the most eagerly anticipated clash of the season, one of Collingwood's stars, Jeremy Howe, has been ruled out for the rest of the match after being concussed late in the first quarter by his own teammate.

With the Pies and reigning-premiers Richmond Tigers doing battle on a glorious Saturday afternoon at the MCG, onlookers poured into the sacred ground to watch the number one and three sides go at it.

With Jordan De Goey ruled out for Collingwood earlier in the week due to bone stress, Nathan Buckley needed all of his defenders and wouldn't have appreciated Darcy Moore sending one of his own teammates off.

Late in the first quarter, with the Tigers building a quick three-goal lead, the ball was sent up the wing through the Tigers towards a massive contest.

A number of players went up, including Moore and Howe. Jacob Townsend was Howe's man, and appeared to hold his direct opponent while heading towards the pack.

With Moore rising from the other side of the contest with his knee out in front, Howe had no other option but to brace for contact. It made for nasty vision.

Instead of taking the stretcher, Howe opted to be helped off by medical staff and was even shown to be running down to the rooms.

Because he chose to leave the field through the gate, Howe could have returned to play if he was deemed fit.

He was shown to take the bench following the first quarter break but did don the jacket meaning his day was over.

AFL fans showed their support via Twitter.

There were even those suggesting that Townsend was at fault for the incident.
