After 238 games with the Kangaroos, key defender Scott Thompson will retire at the end of the year.

The 33-year-old has spent 12 seasons with North Melbourne, after being drafted as a mature-age recruit from the Geelong VFL side in 2007.

Speaking to nmfc.com.au, North's GM of Football, Cameron Joyce was full of praise for Thompson.

“When it comes to our famed ‘Never Beaten’ mantra, Scott epitomises it more than any other,”  Joyce said.

“He is a player that will never lie down, and always gives his all out on the field.

“Scott’s determination, durability, competitiveness and grit can never be questioned and he sets a terrific standard for all our players.

“He has been an incredible pick-up for us.

“We couldn’t have hoped for a better player, person and leader.”

The Roos will look to the future to replace Thompson in their best 22, with Sam Durdin and Ben McKay two names that could potentially fill that key defender role.

Robbie Tarrant is also currently playing as a key defender.

Thompson's toughness was put to the test earlier this year, after playing through the pain of a ruptured testicle in round 18.

Playing against the Lions at the Gabba, he went straight from the ground to the hospital for surgery, before returning last round against the Hawks.

Meanwhile, North coach Rhyce Shaw says he isn't concerned fellow veteran Todd Goldstein hasn't re-signed with the Kangaroos yet.

Goldstein is being pursued by St Kilda and has been the No.1 ruckman at North since 2010.

“Todd has been a fantastic player for our footy club for a long time. I’d love to see him in our colours next year — he is so important to what we do,” Shaw said.

“He’s still a top-three ranked ruckman in the competition I think at his best, and I’d love for him to be here.

“I’d be worrying if it got any later (than August). I’m looking for him to be as comfortable as he can and hopefully he signs.”
