St Kilda champ Nick Riewoldt won't be on the panel which selects the club's next coach.

Alan Richardson recently resigned as Saints coach, with Brett Ratten taking over in a caretaker capacity until the end of the season.

Ratten guided the club to win over the Bulldogs in his first game in charge, though who will get the full-time job remains up in the air.

Riewoldt, who captained St Kilda for 11 seasons, winning six best and fairests, had been rumoured to have been offered a role in the selection of the next coach, though speaking on AFL360 on Wednesday night, he confirmed he had turned down the chance.

"I won’t be on that panel," Riewoldt said.

"I don’t necessarily subscribe to really recently retired players being part of that process.

"I feel like I’ve got a good idea of what a coach looks like, but there’s a lot of nuance in that as well."

Riewoldt, who played 336 games at the Saints after being taken with the first pick in 2000 draft, said he wants to help the struggling footy club but didn't feel he was the best person for the job.

"I haven't even gone down the path of the level one, level two, any of those coaching courses, where I think you develop a real understanding of what a coach should be skilled at and gifted in," Riewoldt said.

"I’m just embarking on a career in media.

"What was weighing on me was my desire to help the footy club, but I just don’t think I’m the best positioned person to be able to do that at the moment."
