Greater Western Sydney defender Nick Haynes is set to miss multiple weeks with a fractured larynx after a clash with Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli.

Haynes suffered the injury in the second quarter of the Giants' 61-point loss to the Dogs.

The Giants are hopeful that Haynes will return in time for finals, but scans will determine how long he will be out for.

"He saw a specialist and he's going to miss the next two weeks, if not up to four, so it's pretty disappointing for Nick," GWS football boss Wayne Campbell told the club website.

"Our doctors haven't seen an injury like it before.

"He managed to see out the game but couldn't breathe after the game, and our doctors did the right thing by him after that."

The 27-year-old was felled by a late bump from Bontempelli, and recieved a down-field free kick.

He played out the rest of the game, and recorded 26 disposals in a disappointing loss.

Bontempelli was charged with rough conduct, and fined $2000 with an early plea.
