Melbourne's season is still alive. Just.

The Demons escaped with a five-point win over Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, though things got very tense in the dying stages.

Marty Hore got a fingertip to a Hawks inside 50 with seconds on the clock, preventing Chad Wingard taking possession and allowing Melbourne to clear the danger.

That came after a forward foray from Hawthorn, started by a Ben McEvoy mark in defence, slingshotting his side into one final thrust.

Check out the frantic final moments below.

After getting off to a sluggish start, the Dees were in touching distance at the main break, trailing by nine points, largely thanks to the Hawks inability to put them to the sword.

Simon Goodwin's side took the lead in the third term, extending it to more than three goals before the Hawks fought back, taking the lead courtesy of this Jarryd Roughead bomb.

Melbourne rallied and two quick goals to Jay Lockhart and James Harmes looked to have sealed the win.

Hawthorn got one back through Luke Breust, his fourth of the match, setting the stage for a nervy finish for the Dees faithful.

Though they held on, with their second win of the season lifting them off the bottom of the ladder.
