He may be the Geelong skipper but Joel Selwood committed an absolute coach-killer in the third quarter of his side's elimination final with Melbourne at the MCG on Friday night.

Chasing the game after a shocking start, the Cats looked as if they were finding their feet when Tom Hawkins had a chance to bring the margin to 14 points with a very gettable sot shot.

Much to the dismay of the Cats big man and his teammates, the ball was taken off him as a free kick was blown against Selwood 100 metres away.

Replays showed Selwood wrestling with Jake Melksham before throwing him to the ground and resuming hostilities with James Harmes.

The umpires didn't miss the scrap, giving Melksham a free kick and taking the wind out of Geelong's sails.

As it turned out, Geelong were only able to add one more point for the quarter.

Melbourne's wayward kicking again prevented them from extending their lead, but they still took a 23-point advantage into the final term.

Geelong weren't able to close the gap in the last quarter, bowing out of the 2018 season with a 29-point loss.

Questions will certainly be asked of another disappointing finals campaign after a season that started with plenty of promise.

For the Dees, they set up a blockbuster semi final against Hawthorn next week, safe in the knowledge that their brand of football stacks up when it counts.
