North Melbourne have confirmed that key position player Majak Daw will undergo surgery after an incident at Bolte Bridge on Monday night.

Kangaroos chairman Ben Buckley addressed the media on Tuesday to confirm that Daw was in hospital and request privacy for the 27-year-old and his family.

"Majak is currently recovering in hospital after an incident last night," Buckley said.

"Majak sustained very serious injuries to his hips and pelvic region.

"He is currently in a stable condition and is expected to be operated on in the next few days.

"Our primary concern is, of course, his mental and physical health and wellbeing, and also the wellbeing of his family, friends, teammates, coaches and staff at the club.

"The club is providing full and ongoing support for Majak and his family – and also the players and the wider club community.

"We’d like to sincerely thank everyone for their messages of support and concern for Majak.

"We understand the significant level of interest, but again – we ask that the privacy of Majak, his family, players and staff be respected at this sensitive time."

Daw has played 50 games for North Melbourne in six seasons and in 2018 emerged as one of the competition's premier key backmen after previously playing as a ruckman/forward.

In 2013, he became the first Sudanese born player in the history of the league

The AFLPA also released a statement in the wake of the incident.

"The AFLPA has been working closely with North Melbourne to ensure Majak Daw and his teammates, as well as other players from across the competition, have access to the appropriate wellbeing support," the statement read.

"We join the AFL and North Melbourne in calling for the privacy of Majak, his family and his teammates be respected during this challenging time."
