North Melbourne defender Majak Daw has become a father for the first time, with partner Emma McKay giving birth to their first child on Thursday.

Daw took to social media with the news, capping off an incredible 12 months for the Roos big man.

The couple announced they were expecting "baby Daw" back in April, with Hendrix arriving early on Thursday.

"Hendrix Kuat William Daw, our little man was born this morning around 1am. @emomckayand I are so thrilled and proud to be his parents," Daw shared on Instagram.

Daw's story has been one of the most uplifting of 2019.

After suffering serious hip and pelvis injuries in a fall off Melbourne's Bolte Bridge in December, the 28-year-old's recovery has been remarkable.

Medicos were initially unsure whether the AFL's first Sudanese-born player would ever walk again, though he continued to tick off milestones throughout the season.

His North Melbourne teammates erupted as he first began running on an assisted treadmill.

He then progressed to running unassisted, eventually getting back into full training, signing a contract extension and playing in the VFL before a hamstring injury ended his season early.
