While Brisbane veteran Luke Hodge will almost certainly be at the club next year, it will likely be in a coaching role, as his playing career comes to an end.

Hodge has had a decorated career so far, playing 331 games at both Hawthorn and Brisbane.

The 34-year-old retired at the end of the 2017 season, but was lured out of retirement by the Lions to play up north the next year.

While some critics questioned why Hodge would play on following his first retirement in 2017, he justified that decision with strong form at Brisbane, while also taking on an on-field mentoring role.

With his contract up at the end of 2019, the Herald Sun has reported that Hodge will almost certainly move into an assistant coaching role.

Should Hodge retire come the end of the year, he will finish as one of the greats of the game, winning four flags at the Hawks, as well as two Norm Smith Medals.

He was a former number one draft pick in 2001, and captained the Hawks to their three-peat in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

He was an All-Australian in 2005, 2008 and 2010.
