There have been question marks over his future this year, but GWS has backed coach Leon Cameron with a two-year contract extension.

Cameron, the young club's second coach, has been in charge since taking over from Kevin Sheedy in 2014 and is now locked in until the end of 2022.

Last year's runners-up were tipped to be at the pointy end of the ladder again this season, though inconsistent form has them currently in ninth place, out of the top eight on percentage with four games to play.

Speaking following the announcement on Wednesday, Cameron's 48th birthday, Giants footy manager Jason McCartney said the club were happy to keep the coach on.

"Leon is an outstanding coach who has led this club to victories in the last four finals series as well as our maiden grand final appearance," McCartney said.

"Leon has been central to building the strong culture of the Giants which has grown rapidly both on and off-field under his guidance.

"Given his success and the relationships he’s formed since arriving at the club at the end of 2012, we are delighted to extend his contract for a further two seasons."

Cameron led the club to it's first grand final in 2019, though that ended with a demoralising 89-point defeat to Richmond.

With a huge amount of talent at their disposal, questions have been asked if GWS have under-performed in recent years.

They are the only team to have won a final in each of the past four seasons, though they are yet to crack a maiden premiership.

Many of their current stars, with the exception of Jeremy Cameron who is yet to sign a contract for next season, are locked in long term, giving the coach plenty to work with over the next few seasons.

As for this campaign, they play Carlton, Adelaide, Melbourne and St Kilda in the run home, with the final round clash against the Demons shaping as a potential shootout for a place in the finals.
