St Kilda's Jake Carlisle will have to face the music from the match review panel after a high shot that had Richmond's Jack Riewoldt in all sorts.

With the reigning premiers leading 8-0, they brought the ball forward through the middle of the park thanks to Dustin Martin.

The 2017 Brownlow Medallist shifted the ball to Shane Edwards, who sent the ball Riewoldt's way in the 50.

The Tigers' hero marked it, but Carlisle came in late to spoil the footy.

The Saints' backman collected Riewoldt in the head in an ugly incident, and it appeared Carlisle's late hit may have knocked his opponent out.

Play was stopped before Riewoldt was helped off the ground.

Surprisingly, the umpires decided not to pay 50 despite the clear late contact.

Josh Caddy stepped up to take the shot at goal and sent it straight through the big posts.

It was later announced that Riewoldt wouldn't return to the fixture.

Richmond are seeking their eighth win of the season, while the Saints are looking for just their second.

Towards the end of the first quarter, the Tigers had built a slim nine-point lead.

Fans weren't happy with Carlisle's effort.

The St Kilda player was reported for his troubles.
