Gold Coast Suns midfielder Jack Martin is set to ask for a five-year deal worth close to $3 million after nominating for the pre-season draft.

Martin played 97 games for Gold Coast after arriving as a mini-draft selection in 2012 before his debut in 2014.

However, the Claremont product expressed his desire to be traded from the Suns during the season, nominating Carlton as his desired club.

Both teams attempted to get a deal done during the trade period, however, they couldn't agree to terms, leading to Martin delisting from the Suns and nominating for the pre-season draft on Monday.

This led some clubs to believe that the Suns would re-draft him since they hold the number one pick in the pre-season draft,

However, The Age has revealed that the 24-year-old will demand a five-year $3 million contract from any club that takes him in the draft.

The midfielder is expected to ask for $1 million for next year, with the deal set to average out to just over $600,000 per year.

Whilst the demands leaves Carlton in the prime position to select him with pick three, the Suns have refused to rule out re-drafting him.

"Certainly the list management group and the coaches will have a very serious look at it," Suns chairman Tony Cochrane said.

Brisbane midfielder Mitch Robinson urged the club to follow through with this threat and re-take him, believing that the interstate clubs need to start putting their foot down to reverse the current trend of players leaving.

"If I was Gold Coast, I would play hard ball,” he said on the Rip Through It podcast.

“I reckon us Queensland clubs and us interstate clubs, they need to put their foot down.

“No offence to Jack Martin. I would be flat as if the club picked me back up after I wanted to leave.

“It’s a trend, get a good player in, have them for a few years, get something out of them and then what have they been getting back?

“If I was Gold Coast, I would pick him (Martin) back up, purely from a business idea. I’d say, ‘Nah, it’s not happening.’”
