GWS will be without superstar forward Toby Greene for at least a month after he suffered a shoulder injury during the Giants' heartbreaking defeat to Richmond.
Greene picked up a fracture to the greater tuberosity humerus during the four-point defeat at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, but played out the entire match as it went down to the wire.
GWS head of medical Cullan Ball praised Greene for his resilience to continue on the field with the injury and explained the diagnosis.
"Toby’s as tough as they come and played out the game with the fracture in his shoulder," Ball said on GWS' official website.
"We had it scanned on Sunday which revealed the injury and we expect him to be sidelined for at least a month.
"Knowing Toby, he’ll do everything right in his recovery and rehabilitation and he’ll be back out on field as soon as possible."
With captain Stephen Coniglio currently out injured until the second half of the season with an ankle issue, Greene had assumed the role of Giants skipper since round three.
The 27-year-old has kicked 22 goals in nine matches, including two bags of five, and leads the competition to date for score involvements.
GWS led Richmond by as much as 28 points in the third quarter before the Tigers stormed back to snatch the win by less than a kick, after a frantic final few minutes.
With less than a minute to play, Greene could have arguably received a free kick deep inside forward 50, before Tim Taranto had a shot in open play to win the game, but his decision to use the dribble kick saw the shot intercepted by Dylan Grimes on the line.
Victory would have been huge for the ninth-placed Giants, who have recovered to be a finals contender after starting the season with three consecutive losses.
Since recording their first win for the season in round four against Collingwood, GWS have beaten Sydney, Adelaide and Essendon, with their only blemishes coming against the Bulldogs and Tigers.
Joining Greene on the sidelines for a month will be rebounding defender Harry Perryman, who subbed out of the Richmond game with a hamstring injury.
However, the Giants will be hoping to get back Nick Haynes and Sam Reid for Sunday's match against West Coast at GIANTS stadium.
