David Swallow and Jarrod Witts will lead Gold Coast in 2019, tasked with guiding the club into smoother waters after a difficult few seasons.

The Suns lost skipper Gary Ablett at the end of 2017, with Tom Lynch and Steven May appointed as co-captains for 2018.

The pair only lasted one more season at the club, ending up at Richmond and Melbourne respectively.

Swallow and Witts, both 26, have long been touted as leaders-in-waiting at the club and recently signed long-term contract extensions.

The club made the announcement on Monday with Suns chief executive Mark Evans saying the pair had the right attributes to take the club forward.

"Both David and Jarrod are extremely invested in our football club and are committed to helping us become a team that truly inspires the Gold Coast community," Evans said.

"We believe David and Jarrod, with the support of the leadership group will play a pivotal role in shaping our future, they all display the attributes we are looking for and we congratulate them on their appointments."

Swallow has played 117 games at the club since being taken with number one pick in 2010 draft ahead of their first season in the competition.

The midfielder said it was a big honour to be made skipper.

"It’s a very proud moment for me, I’m excited by the challenge that is in front of us as a football club and I can’t wait to play my role in driving our club forward," said Swallow.

Ruckman Witts has emerged into one of the competition's premier big men since moving to the Suns ahead of the 2017 season.

Now in his third year at the club, the 80-gamer said he has made a conscious effort to improve his leadership qualities.

"My leadership is something I’ve worked hard on over the last couple of years and I’m grateful for the opportunities the club has given me and I’m looking forward to playing a role in shaping our future," said Witts.

The pair will head up an eight-man leadership group featuring Touk Miller and Pearce Hanley as vice captains, as well as Alex Sexton, Jarrod Harbrow, Brayden Fiorini and George Horlin-Smith.
