The GWS Giants and Hawthorn Hawks have made history, playing the first-ever AFL game in the snow during their round 21 clash at UNSW Canberra Oval.

The contest kicked off at near-freezing temperatures, with the Bureau of Meteorology revealing that it was just 3.4C at the start of the match, with an apparent temperature of -3.1C.

With the Hawks narrowly in front 19-13 with four minutes remaining in the first quarter, it appeared that the ground was getting hit by a passing shower.

However, this wasn't an ordinary shower, with snow falling on the ground until the end of the quarter.

This sent social media into overdrive, with many marvelling at the unique event, whilst some questioned why the AFL decided to schedule a game in the nation's capital during the middle of winter on a Friday night.
