It took all of three seconds in the AFL's Thursday night fixture between Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs at the Adelaide Oval, but an umpiring decision has left fans and commentators alike fuming, and not for the first time this season.

The ball was bounced, two players went for the footy, and there was a whistle.

Toby McLean was penalised for having his head over the footy against Robbie Gray, who immediately had the Power on the front foot.

Look at the decision which sent fans into meltdown in the video player below.

Port Adelaide has built a 20-point lead midway through the first quarter on Thursday night, but everyone had taken time off from watching the match to complain about the decision.

"Poor decision that one, both players allowed to go for the footy," Mark Soderstrom said on Fox Footy's coverage.

"He (McLean) definitely didn't slide with his knees.

"Just a mistake by the umpire."

James Brayshaw was equally perplexed.

"You are allowed to win the footy in the contest last time we all checked," Brayshaw added.

They weren't the only ones.
