Christian Petracca reportedly rescued following underwater training exercise image

An underwater training exercise went wrong at Melbourne on Tuesday as Christian Petracca had to be rescued by the supervisor.

A report emerged on AFL.com.au on Friday that Petracca found himself in trouble as the Demons were taking part in a pool training session at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

According to Damian Barrett, the forward had to be rescued after struggling during the exercise that sees players hold medicine balls while underwater.

The drill was part of a training session that looks to place the players in an oxygen-deprived state known as hypoxia.

Petracca was reportedly distressed following the incident, though he has since trained as normal with the team and barring a late change will line up against the Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

The Demons are one of many clubs who conduct pool sessions in a bid to gain an edge over their competition.

On their pre-season trip to USA they took part in a pool session led by Aussie big wave surfer Mark Visser.

Petracca, 23, has played all six of Melbourne's game in 2019, struggling to make much of an impact in a forward line that is yet to click.

His form has largely mirrored his side's, with the Dees sitting last on the ladder with a 1-5 record and a percentage of 69.
