Brisbane Lions have given coach Chris Fagan a contract extension that will take him until at least the end of 2021.

Fagan was already contracted until the end of next season but the club have handed him a two-year extension.

In his second season in charge at the Lions, the young side have given fans plenty to get excited about for the future.

Though they've only won five games, the same as 2017, they've dragged themselves off the bottom of the ladder to a likely 15th-placed finish.

Fagan said it was an exciting time for everyone at Brisbane

“For the club to give me the opportunity to go on for a couple more years after the end of next year is really exciting,” Fagan said.

“I feel like by that time we should be a really strong, highly respected club."

Brisbane haven't played finals since 2009, but with a host of young guns such as Harris Andrews, Eric Hipwood, Cameron Rayner and Alex Witherden to go with established stars such as Dayne Beams and Dayne Zorko, things are looking up.

Following the news of Fagan's re-signing, Lions chairman Andrew Wellington said it was pleasing to secure the coach for a further two years.

"The board are very pleased to extend Chris Fagan’s contract,” Chairman Andrew Wellington said.

“Chris has played a critical role in re-establishing a stable environment at the Brisbane Lions.

"He has provided tremendous leadership to the playing and coaching group as well as being incredibly supportive of the off-field initiatives of the club.

“I know the board are all very much looking forward to continuing working with Chris to make our club successful."
