After missing the opening two rounds of the season with a calf injury, Chad Wingard made his first game in brown and gold count.

The former Port Adelaide forward finished with three impressive goals as the Hawks claimed a 16-point come-from-behind win.

After giving up the first four goals of the match, Hawthorn came home with a wet sail to improve to 2-1 for the season.

Luke Breust was the best for the Hawks, finishing with five goals, but Wingard will be more than content with his first outing at a new club.

The pick of the livewire's goals was a sharp snap after evading a few would-be tacklers in the final quarter that effectively sealed the game for Alastair Clarkson's side.

The 25-year-old was asked about his off-season move after the match.

"It was something I needed to do," Wingard told Channel Seven.

"Personally, off the field and on the field, it's just something to challenge myself again."

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson lauded the exciting left-footer in the post-match press conference.

"Chad only needs five or six touches," Clarkson said.

"He's a little bit like (Cyril) Rioli, he doesn't need much of the footy to turn a game your way

"He's an electric player and he gets his teammates up because of the special things he can do."
