Hawthorn have extended the contract of skipper Ben Stratton, keeping the defender at the club until at least the end of next season.

Stratton was due to become a free agent at the end the season though was never likely to depart the club.

The 30-year-old assumed the captaincy at the start of 2019, taking over from Jarryd Roughead.

Hawks footy manager Graham Wright sung the West Australian's praises following the announcement of his new deal.

"Ben is a highly valued player, clubman and teammate," Wright told the club website.

"His captaincy is a reflection of the trust and respect his teammates and the club have for him, and we’re looking forward to watching him grow in this role over the coming months.

"He leads by example, exemplified through his courage and commitment on the field, and he sets a great standard for those around him.

"We’re thrilled to have him locked in until the end of next year."

Stratton has played 173 games since being selected with the 46th pick in the 2009 draft.

He quickly established himself as a best 22 player, taking part in Hawthorn's four consecutive grand finals between 2012-15, winning three straight flags along the way.
