North Melbourne midfielder Ben Cunnington has signed a three-year deal with the Roos, after having arguably his career-best year.

He'll now be at the club until at least the end of 2022.

The deal sees Cunnington move closer to being a one-club player, and he expressed his love for the club.

“I can’t imagine playing for any other club and leaving never crossed my mind,” Cunnington told nmfc.com.au.

“I can’t thank the club enough for what they’ve done for me and my family, just welcoming me and supporting me.

“They’ve (the Kangaroos) shown full support and belief in me to be the person I am today.”

Speaking on a recent episode of the Kangaroos' club podcast, Cunnington elaborated on his love of the club.

"When you are running out and putting the North Melbourne jumper on, it definitely has more meaning," he said.

"The rich history behind it ... we're just not playing for ourselves, you are playing for the other thousand Shinboners who've represented us before, and the whole club.

"It's definitely got a lot more meaning and I'm trying to appreciate that more as I get older."

Cunnington has rewarded the Kangaroos since they used Pick 5 on him in the 2009 National Draft.

He's been one of the most consistent midfielders in the AFL this year, averaging 28 disposals including 17 contested possessions, as well as 8 clearances.

Last month, Cunnington spoke to SEN about the exit of former coach Brad Scott, and the effect that had on the club.

Scott left the club earlier this year after nine-and-a-half years in charge.

“It felt like a loss in your family, for me personally, he’s backed me right from the start, early on he kept showing belief in me to be able to be who I am today, so for me it was personal and I wish I could have him for my whole career, but that’s life and we move on.”
