The AFL have announced a 40-man squad for the 2020 All-Australian team, with flag favourites Port Adelaide and Geelong dominating the squad with five selections each.

The squad was announced on Tuesday, which is set to be narrowed down to 22 players at the AFL Awards night on Thursday.

20-year-old forward Zak Butters was the surprise inclusion in the extended side, joined by Port teammates Travis Boak, Darcy Byrne-Jones, Charlie Dixon and Tom Jonas.

Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield will be looking to tie the record for most selections as he guns for an eighth nomination.

He was joined in the extended squad with Mark Blicavs, Cam Guthrie, Tom Hawkins and Sam Menegola.

Meanwhile, Collingwood's games record holder Scott Pendlebury will hope to cap off a perfect week with his seventh All-Australian selection, following his 314th appearance for the club during their loss to Port Adelaide on Monday, a club record.

The Magpies and West Coast have the next most representatives behind Geelong and Port Adelaide with four players each in the squad, while Brisbane, Fremantle, Melbourne, Richmond and the Western Bulldogs each have three players included.

Sydney midfielder Luke Parker was a surprise omission despite a strong season, with Melbourne defender Steven May and All-Australian ruckmen Brodie Grundy and Todd Goldstein notable exclusions.
