The All Australian team for 2019 has been announced, with nine players being honoured for the first time.

22 of the AFL's best were named in the team of the season in a ceremony at St Kilda's Palais Theatre.

Harris Andrews, Dylan Grimes, Bachar Houli, Lachie Neale, Tim Kelly, Michael Walters, Jack Darling, Jeremy Cameron and Jack Macrae all make their first appearances in the team.

At the other end of the scale, Patrick Dangerfield received an incredible seventh selection, with Scott Pendlebury not far behind with his sixth nod.

Fremantle superstar Nat Fyfe was named captain, his first time in the role, while Eagles counterpart Shannon Hurn was announced as his deputy.

Magpies star Brodie Grundy won the battle for the number one ruck spot, with Max Gawn relegated to the interchange bench.

Reigning premiers West Coast led the way with four players selected, tied with Geelong, while Brisbane received three.

Of the big players left out, Dustin Martin and Gary Ablett headlined the list, while Hugh McCluggage - probably the best winger in the competition this season - missed out, the selectors opting to place midfielders on the wing.

Adelaide, Essendon, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Sydney had no players make the final 22.
